A 20 kW fiber laser handles reflective aluminium as normal production work, AC TIG and handheld laser welding control distortion, and Haas milling and turning centres hold ±0.02 mm on machined features.

What is different

Aluminium is not thin steel

Three properties decide whether an aluminium part works. It conducts heat away fast, so welding needs more power and better control. It has a narrow forming window, so a bend radius that is fine in mild steel will crack a 5000 or 6000 series panel, especially across the rolling direction. And it is soft, so it marks, and every handling step has to protect the surface you intend to show.

In cutting, aluminium is reflective, which used to be a real limitation. Our 20 kW fiber laser handles it as ordinary work, together with the two 3 kW machines for thinner material, and cut parts come off at ±0.1 mm without the burr that follows a saw or a punch.

For welded aluminium we use AC TIG for control and the handheld fiber laser where a long seam would otherwise distort the panel. Machined aluminium runs on the Haas VF-2 and ST-15Y, which is how the precision aluminium frames and test rigs we have built for research projects reached their tolerances.

Alloys

Alloy families and what they are for

Common aluminium alloys in fabrication work

Family

Typical alloys

Behaviour and use

5000 series

EN AW-5754, 5083

Good formability and corrosion resistance, weldable, the default for bent and welded sheet parts and marine work

6000 series

EN AW-6082, 6060, 6061

Heat treatable and stronger, used for machined parts, profiles and structural components; bending needs a generous radius

1000 / 3000 series

EN AW-1050, 3003

Soft and highly formable, used for covers, trim and deep-formed panels where strength is not the point

Anodising quality

5754 and 6060 in anodising grades

Where the finish is anodised rather than painted, the alloy and the surface must be specified from the start

If you are unsure which alloy to specify, describe the load, the environment and the finish. Aluminium is reflective, which is why it needs a modern fiber source rather than an old CO2 machine. The 20 kW Glory Star handles it as normal production work, with two 3 kW GWEIKE machines for thinner sheet.

</details><details>
Do you anodise?

Anodising runs through partner plants, not in-house. In-house we sandblast and powder coat, which for many aluminium parts is the more robust and cheaper finish. Tell us at RFQ stage which one the part needs, because anodising constrains the alloy choice.

</details><details>
Why did my aluminium part crack when bent?

Almost always bend radius, alloy or grain direction. A 6000 series part bent to a radius suited to mild steel, or bent across the rolling direction, will crack at the outer fibre. We check this in the DFM review and propose a radius, an alloy or a bend orientation that works.

</details><details>
Can you weld aluminium without distortion?

Distortion is controlled, not eliminated. We fixture the assembly, use AC TIG for control, choose handheld laser welding where the seam is long and thin, and where a dimension must hold, we machine the feature after welding.

</details><details>
Do you machine aluminium as well as fabricate it?

Yes, on a Haas VF-2 machining centre and a Haas ST-15Y lathe with live tooling and a Ø63 mm bar feeder. This is how a fabricated part with a precision interface gets both operations from one supplier and one tolerance chain.

</details><details>
Is aluminium cheaper than steel for my part?

Per kilogram it is more expensive, per part it depends. Aluminium can remove a coating operation, reduce shipping weight and simplify handling on your line. We are happy to quote the same part in both materials so the comparison is real rather than theoretical.

</details>

Related

Where to go next

Low volumePrototypes and small batch productionMachinesTechnical capabilities and machine listMade to drawingMetal parts from STEP, DXF and PDF files

Request a quote

Send your files, get a real quotation

Upload STEP or DXF files, tell us material, thickness, finish and quantity, and our engineers return a quotation with manufacturability notes.
