Each metal behaves differently under bending: <strong>different springback, different minimum bend radius, different tolerances, different crack likelihood<\/strong>. A CAM program that works perfectly for S275 steel can ruin the piece if material changes to Al 6082 T6 aluminum.<\/p>\n<h2>Steel (S235JR, S275JR, S355J2)<\/h2>\n<p>The most common and predictable material for industrial structural bending.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Minimum bend radius:<\/strong> 1\u00d7t (S235) to 1.5\u00d7t (S355), where t is thickness<\/li>\n<li><strong>Springback:<\/strong> Medium (2\u20134\u00b0), well predictable with CAM software<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thicknesses that bend:<\/strong> 0.5\u201320 mm in typical press brake, 0.4\u20133.2 mm in Salvagnini panel bender<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cracks:<\/strong> Rare if radius is correct, exception is cold-rolled thick material where structure has &#8220;fibers&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Special:<\/strong> Cold-rolled (DC01) easy, hot-rolled (S275) with larger radius, high-strength (S460+) demanding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Stainless (Inox 304, 316L, 430)<\/h2>\n<p>Harder material for bending, more springback and sensitivity to die scratches.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Minimum bend radius:<\/strong> 1.5\u00d7t (304 thin) to 3\u00d7t (304 above 5mm)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Springback:<\/strong> High (5\u20138\u00b0), material &#8220;returns&#8221; more than steel after bending, over-bending needed<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thicknesses:<\/strong> 0.4\u20136 mm typically (304), thinner materials easier<\/li>\n<li><strong>Special precautions:<\/strong> Use PU films or plastic dies to avoid scratches on visible surface. On 316L, particular attention to contamination with rust (reduces corrosion resistance)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Work hardening:<\/strong> Inox hardens during bending, second pass on same angle can cause crack<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Aluminum (Al 5754, 6082 T6, 5083)<\/h2>\n<p>Aluminum requires separate handling, <strong>cracking is a real risk<\/strong>, especially on 6082 T6.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Minimum bend radius:<\/strong> 1\u00d7t (5754 soft) to 4\u00d7t (6082 T6), tempered T6 aluminum needs large radius<\/li>\n<li><strong>Springback:<\/strong> High (5\u201310\u00b0 or more), depends heavily on alloy<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thicknesses:<\/strong> 0.5\u20138 mm typically<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cracks:<\/strong> The main risk. 6082 T6 must either use large radius (2\u00d7t+) or be heated to 200\u00b0C before bending (annealing)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Direction:<\/strong> Bend axis must be perpendicular to material rolling direction for minimum crack likelihood<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Special Materials<\/h2>\n<h3>Galvanized Steel (Pre-galvanized)<\/h3>\n<p>Hot-dip galvanized steel that&#8217;s bent after galvanizing. Zn can flake in the bend area, for responsible applications, better to bend first and galvanize after.<\/p>\n<h3>Hardox (Wear-resistant steel)<\/h3>\n<p>Very hard, difficult to bend.
