Laser Welding vs MIG/TIG: When to Choose Which

Laser welding (fiber laser welding) is one of the newest additions to AXINAR’s toolset. It doesn’t replace MIG or TIG welding, it complements them for specific cases where precision, speed, or weld cleanliness is critical.

How Laser Welding Works

A fiber laser concentrates energy into a very small beam diameter (~0.1mm). The beam melts the metals at the contact point and joins them with a minimal heat-affected zone (HAZ). Filler material is usually not needed, welding happens by autogenous fusion.

Comparison with MIG/TIG

Laser TIG MIG
Speed Very high (5x MIG) Low Medium
Heat-affected zone (HAZ) Very small Small Medium
Distortion Minimal Small Medium
Precision 0.05mm 0.2mm 0.5mm
Equipment cost High Low Medium
Material thickness 0.1–8mm 0.5–20mm 1–40mm

Laser Welding Applications

  • Stainless steel: food tanks, dairy industry equipment, medical devices
  • Aluminum: electronic enclosures, heat exchangers
  • Very thin materials: 0.1–1mm where MIG burns through the material
  • High production speed: production lines, robotic welding
  • Precision points: spot welding on PCB housings, batteries, sensors

When It’s NOT the Best Choice

  • Metal thickness above 8mm, MIG is more economical
  • Structural constructions, MIG with fill wire gives better mechanical properties
  • Field work, laser needs a stable environment
AXINAR Laser Welding
Fiber laser 3kW, 5x MIG speed

AXINAR operates 3kW fiber laser welding in Thessaloniki, for applications where MIG/TIG cannot meet precision or speed requirements.

  • Precise fitting without distortion
  • Steel, stainless, aluminum
  • Ideal for inox & tight tolerances
