The Hellenic Biomass Development Company (ELEAVIO) is pleased to announce the launch of Greece’s first domestic market Wood Pellet Price Index. The Index was developed with the scientific support of the National Center for Research and Technological Development (CERTH) and was largely based on the standards of similar initiatives by other biomass and pellet associations in Europe, such as proPellets Austria for wood pellets and the Spanish Biomass Association (AVEBIOM). The Price Index will be updated and posted on a monthly basis on the ELABIOM website.
Informing consumers about the retail prices of wood pellets, as well as their historical trends.
– The relationship and comparison of wood pellet prices with other energy products in the domestic heating market.
– Enhancing the transparency and extroversion of the Greek market for solid biofuels and pellets in particular, through cooperation between commercial enterprises in the renewable bioenergy sector.
– Providing a reliable source of information on retail prices of wood pellets and its use by research and scientific bodies in the preparation of studies.
– Supporting policymakers and public administration services in decisions to promote renewable energy sources with a neutral carbon footprint, such as wood pellets.
The Price Index refers to wood pellets for domestic use, class A1 according to ISO 17225-2 and certified according to solid biofuel quality certification systems, such as the globally recognized, transparent and independent ENplus® certification system for wood pellets for the entire supply chain, from production to final delivery, which has completed 15 years of successful operation.
The Price Index survey for the average retail price of ENplus®-certified A1 class wood pellets for October–November 2025 has been completed. As shown in Graphs 1 and 2 (15 kg package and 1 ton of product, respectively), prices are similar to those in September 2023 (€6.84/bag for the mainland and €6.86/bag for high-consumption regions, respectively), when the last major increase was recorded. Pellet prices continue to rise after the end of the summer season, as a result of price increases in major foreign markets, but also of inflationary trends in recent years (Figure 3). For the country as a whole, the price is at the same level as in November 2023, while compared to a year ago, in November 2024, it has increased by €59.22/ton.
With regard to the comparison of heating fuel prices for November 2025 (Figure 4), based on the lower calorific value of each fuel, it appears that wood pellets are competitive in terms of cost compared to other heating solutions, at 9.12 cents/kWh, including 24% VAT. The prices of fossil fuels (heating oil, natural gas, and LPG) have remained low for the season due to the high temperatures recorded in Greece, a situation that is expected to change as the winter season progresses.
At the same time, it is worth noting that if VAT on wood pellets were at the same level as natural gas, i.e. 6% instead of the current 24%, the fuel cost per kilowatt hour would be almost identical for both fuels. ELEVIOM has consistently requested the relevant ministries to include pellets in the reduced VAT rates, both for reasons of equality between energy products and because it is a renewable fuel with a neutral carbon cycle and does not contribute to an increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, as is the case with fossil-based natural gas.
Wood pellets in modern heating devices and systems offer a timelessly reliable combination of affordable, environmentally friendly, and renewable energy. The use and operation of wood pellet heating systems in Greece and internationally is fully in line with the modern lifestyle and is based on advanced technological and aesthetic features that provide consumers with a complete thermal comfort experience.
