Powder coating of metals, aluminium and iron powder coating, Axinar S.A. Thessaloniki

Powder Coating
of Metals

Powder coating of metals is the most modern method of metal surface finishing, a solvent-free (VOC-free) powder coating technology that offers excellent resistance to UV radiation, corrosion, scratches and chemicals. At our coating facility in Thessaloniki, Axinar S.A. provides complete powder coating services on aluminium, iron and steel, with certified Qualicoat and Qualisteelcoat processes.

We specialise in aluminium powder coating for architectural applications (window frames, curtain walls, architectural metal elements) and iron powder coating for industrial structures. Polyester powder is applied electrostatically with GEMA equipment and cured in a curing oven at 180–200°C, creating a uniform coating with a thickness of 60–120 µm and maximum durability.

We handle powder coating of structures of every type, powder coating of photovoltaic mounting systems, coating of metal furniture, canopies, carports, lighting poles, frames and industrial components. Every part goes through metal sandblasting and chemical pre-treatment (phosphating) before coating, ensuring excellent adhesion. We use NEOKEM powders and other leading manufacturers.

The cost of powder coating depends on dimensions, geometry, material (aluminium or iron), finish (RAL colours, matt, gloss, textured, metallic, wood-effect sublimation) and quantity of parts. The price of powder coating at Axinar is competitive, with a free quote within 24 hours. Compared to wet paint, powder coating of metals lasts 3–5× longer without peeling or yellowing.

The Process of
Powder Coating of Metals

01

Sandblasting

Metal sandblasting to remove rust, oil and old paint. Creates a rough surface for maximum adhesion of polyester powder.

02

Chemical Pre-Treatment

Phosphating and chemical pre-treatment (degreasing, rinsing) for aluminium and iron. Ensures corrosion protection to EN ISO 12944.

03

Powder Application

Electrostatic application of polyester powder with GEMA guns. The powder is charged electrostatically and adheres uniformly to the metal, thickness 60–120 µm.

04

Oven Curing

Curing in an oven at 180–200°C for 15–20 minutes. The powder melts and forms a hard, uniform coating with excellent UV resistance and durability.

Powder Coating
vs Wet Paint

Powder Coating

Powder Coating

Powder coating of metals uses dry polyester powder that is cured in an oven. Zero VOC emissions, maximum durability.

  • Thickness 60–120 µm in a single pass
  • Durability 15–25+ years outdoors
  • VOC-free, environmentally friendly
  • Resistance to UV, chemicals, scratches
  • Full RAL colour range
  • Finishes: matt, gloss, textured, metallic
  • Qualicoat / Qualisteelcoat certification

Wet Paint

Wet Paint / Liquid Coating

Traditional wet paint uses liquid paints with solvents. Suitable for very large parts or special applications.

  • Thickness 20–40 µm per coat
  • Durability 3–8 years (needs renewal)
  • Contains VOC, solvent emissions
  • Sensitive to UV, peeling
  • Limited colours per range
  • Requires multiple coats
  • Lower initial cost, higher lifecycle cost

Advantages
of Powder Coating of Metals

    Questions about
    Powder Coating of Metals

What is powder coating of metals?
Powder coating of metals is a coating method in which dry polyester powder is electrostatically charged and sprayed onto the metal surface. The part is then placed in a curing oven at 180–200°C, where the powder melts and forms a hard, uniform coating 60–120 µm thick. Powder coating is VOC-free, environmentally friendly and offers excellent resistance to UV, chemicals and mechanical stress.
Which metals can be powder coated?
Powder coating of metals is applied to aluminium, iron, steel, stainless steel and galvanized steel. Aluminium powder coating follows Qualicoat specifications, while iron powder coating follows Qualisteelcoat. At Axinar, metal coating facility in Thessaloniki, we coat every type of metal after appropriate sandblasting and chemical pre-treatment (phosphating).
What is the difference between powder coating and wet paint?
Powder coating uses dry polyester powder instead of liquid paint with solvents. Powder coating gives a thickness of 60–120 µm in a single pass (wet paint needs multiple coats), lasts 15–25+ years (wet paint 3–8 years), emits no VOCs and does not peel. Oven curing creates a chemical bond between powder and metal that is far more durable than simple drying.
How much does powder coating of metals cost?
The cost of powder coating depends on the dimensions of the part, the material (aluminium or iron), the finish (matt, gloss, textured, metallic, wood-effect), the RAL colour and the quantity. The price of powder coating is calculated per square metre or per part. At Axinar, coating facility in Thessaloniki, we provide a free quote within 24 hours. Despite the higher initial cost compared to wet paint, powder coating of metals saves 2–6× over the lifecycle due to zero maintenance.
What applications does powder coating cover?
Powder coating of metals covers a wide range of applications: powder coating of railings and fencing, powder coating of structures (frames, canopies, carports), powder coating of photovoltaic mounting systems, coating of metal furniture (shelves, desks, cabinets), coating of architectural metal elements (window frames, curtain walls), lighting poles, industrial components, machinery and automotive.
What colours and finishes do you offer?
We offer the full RAL colour range (RAL colour coating) with finishes: matt, gloss, textured, metallic. In addition, wood-effect powder coating (sublimation) for a realistic wood appearance on aluminium or iron. We use NEOKEM polyester powders and GEMA application equipment. Every colour is available on request.
Do you handle coating only or complete fabrication?
Powder coating of metals is part of our complete production line: laser cutting, press brake, MIG/TIG welding, deburring, metal sandblasting, powder coating or galvanizing. We deliver a finished product ready for installation. We also accept third-party parts exclusively for powder coating.
How long does powder coating last?
Powder coating of metals lasts 15–25+ years outdoors without peeling, yellowing or colour loss, according to Qualicoat (aluminium) and Qualisteelcoat (iron) specifications. Indoors, durability exceeds 30 years. Durability depends on correct sandblasting, chemical pre-treatment and curing at 180–200°C.
