Bifacial PV panels produce energy from both sides, front from direct sunlight and back from ground reflection. In the right setup, this translates to 10â25% extra annual production without extra space. In the wrong setup, the difference is negligible. What’s critical is HOW they’re installed, not just buying a bifacial panel.
How Bifacial Panels Work
A common monofacial panel has an opaque backsheet. The bifacial has a transparent back surface (glass or polymer) and photovoltaic cells that work on both sides. The front side produces the bulk of energy (~90% of total). The back side adds extra 10â25%, depending on conditions.
Bifacial Gain Factors

2. Height Above Ground
The greater the height, the more reflection reaches both sides. Ideal height: 0.8â1.5m from ground for ground mount, or above roofs with ballast (~30â50cm).
3. Tilt Angle
A lower tilt (15â25°) allows more reflected radiation to reach the back side. Matches East-West and ground mount systems.
4. No Shading from Structural Elements
Beams, piles and rails must be as far back and thin as possible, so as not to shade the back side.
Ideal Installations for Bifacial
- Ground mount (Terrasol): Height from ground, clean bottom side, bifacial gain 10â20%
- East-West agri-PV: Low tilt, uniform reflection, bifacial gain 15â25%
- Solar Carport: Canopies with bright surface below (concrete, asphalt), bifacial gain 5â10% (AXINAR uses Bifacial PERC panels on Solar Carport)
- Roof with ballast: Height from membrane, bright surface, bifacial gain 8â12%
Not Ideal (Bifacial NOT worth it)
- Tile roof: Panel is stuck to tiles, zero back reflection. Use plain monofacial.
- Dark roofs: Black tiles, dark asphalt, bifacial gain < 3%. Extra cost not justified.
- Dense arrangements without height: If back sides shadow each other.
Cost & Payback
Bifacial panels typically cost 5â15% more than same monofacial. In a properly designed ground mount installation with 15% bifacial gain, the extra investment payback happens within 1â2 years. In the remaining 23+ years of operation, the extra 15% is net gain.
