Metal Deburring: What It Is, Why It Matters, Methods

Deburring is one of the most underrated operations in metal fabrication. When you cut metal (laser, plasma, cold saw), when you mill it, when you bend it, small sharp protrusions form at the edges (burrs). These aren’t just a cosmetic issue.

Why Deburring Matters

  • Safety: A burr on an edge injures the operator handling it. In industry, burrs cause 8–12% of manual assembly injuries.
  • Weld quality: A burr at the joint of two pieces prevents proper contact. Welds have gaps, cracks, and reduced strength.
  • Paint quality: Sharp edges don’t hold paint, it just runs off them. This is the first place rust appears.
  • Assembly precision: A 0.3mm burr prevents a piece from fitting into place with 0.1mm tolerance.
  • Fluid flow: In tanks, pipes, exchangers, burrs create turbulent flow and corrosion points.

Deburring Methods

Mechanical

Abrasive belt, brush, deburring machine with disc sheets. Fast, uniform, ideal for mass production.

Manual

File, scraper, hand tool with abrasive disc. For small orders or spots the mechanical tool can’t reach.

Chemical (Electrochemical)

Controlled electrolytic dissolution of burrs. Ideal for precision in medical, electronic parts.

Thermal

Explosion of gas mixture in closed chamber, burns off burrs while leaving the part mass intact.

Applications After Cutting

  • After laser cutting sheet metal, micro-burrs on the back side
  • After CNC milling or turning, burrs at hole edges and thread edges
  • After sheet bending, protrusions at bend corners
  • After plasma or oxy-fuel, burnt zone and large burrs
