Solar Carport with EV Charger: Canopy + Electric Vehicle Charging

The solar carport is perhaps the most underrated PV application in Greece. A space that exists anyway (parking) is transformed into a simultaneous energy production unit + EV charging station + car protection. Combining with an EV charger is where the investment gives maximum result.

How Solar Carport + EV Charging Works

Solar carport is a parking canopy where the roof is replaced by PV panels. It produces energy whenever there’s sunshine. The integrated EV charger draws energy directly from production, without going through the grid (net metering optional).

Advantages of Solar + EV Combination

  • Free charging: Fuel cost/km drops to almost zero while car charges from sun
  • Simultaneous protection: Car is shaded from hot summer sun and rain/snow
  • Maximizing self-consumption: EV acts as PV battery, instead of net metering back to grid, energy is stored in the car
  • No extra space: Uses existing parking, no need for field or roof

Technical Characteristics of AXINAR Solar Carport

  • Structural steel: S420GD (high-strength galvanized)
  • Photovoltaic: Bifacial PERC panels, maximize production
  • Wind pressure: Design for extreme Greek conditions (Eurocode 1)
  • Parameterization: Option to add AC EV charger (7.4 / 11 / 22 kW) or DC fast charging
  • Grid connection: Standard net metering or self-consumption

Actual Production in Greece

A 2-space solar carport (typically ~30 m² covered area) in Athens produces:

  • Installed power: ~5–6 kWp (10–12 panels 500W)
  • Annual production: 7,500–9,000 kWh/year (Athens: ~1,500 kWh/kWp)
  • Equivalent in EV km: 40,000–50,000 km/year (EV consumption ~18 kWh/100km)

EV Charger Options

AC Charging (Type 2)

  • 3.7 kW (single-phase 16A): Basic home charging, 15–20 km per hour
  • 7.4 kW (single-phase 32A): Standard home charging, 30–40 km/hour
  • 11 kW (three-phase 16A): Faster, 55–65 km/hour
  • 22 kW (three-phase 32A): Fast home, 100–120 km/hour

DC Fast Charging

Less common in residential, 50 kW+, needs larger PV installation or battery storage to make sense.

Permit & Legislation

One of the biggest advantages of solar carport in Greece is the simple permitting process:

  • No building permit up to 40m² for residences (per current provisions of New Building Code, verify with local Planning Office)
  • Connection with DEDDIE: Standard net metering if connected to grid
  • EV self-consumption: Doesn’t need grid connection at all, only internal connection

Note: Permitting limits vary by area and legislative updates. Verify with local Planning Office before installation.
